Something you have all asked about is how to pull off the denim on denim look. The good news? It's much easier than you may think - and it works no matter your age or body type! It's one of my favorite outfits for the fall.
So how do you put it all together and make it look really cool and effortless? There's really just a few tricks you have to learn. One of the things I love about denim on denim outfits is you can make it as dressy or as casual as you want. You can pair it with a pair of cute heels and blazer for a dressier look, or you can pair it with a pair of sneakers and cardigan for the weekend. You can really make it your own.
So let's get to those tricks to pulling off that ever so cool denim on denim look!
Tip #1: Have a slight (or big) variation in color
The first thing is to make sure there's a slight (or big) variation in the top and the bottom. Let's pause for a moment and consider this: Think about the denim shirts, the denim jackets, and the jeans you have in your closet. Do any of them match exactly in color? My guess is probably not! So that means almost everything in your closet is going to go together! Perfect. See how easy this is?
In general, follow this rule: if you have a denim or chambray top that is lighter in color, choose a slightly darker jean or skirt for the bottom. And vice versa. But remember, it doesn't have to be a big difference to work. In the photo above you'll see I've got lots of combinations and they all work!
Don't forget about black and white denim, as those also work well when creating an all denim look.
Tip #2: Do the messy sleeve roll!
One thing you'll notice in my photos and the ladies featured in the photo above is that the messy sleeve roll is a must! (I mean, even J. Lo is doing it!) Especially if you are going to only wear jeans or a skirt with a denim shirt.
And ladies, this is the secret to achieving that cool, effortless vibe. Like you didn't try that hard at all, but the result is so, so cool. Hallelujah!

Tip #3: Break up the look with an accessory
If this all denim look is a bit too much for you, a trick I use to break up the denim uniform is to add an accessory of your choice. One of my favorite accessories to add is a belt. Brown, black, snakeskin, leopard, red, etc. You get the idea. Note that your belt doesn't have to match your shoes. In my photo above, I am wearing a brown belt with a black shoe.
What else can you do to break it up? You can add a pop of color or pattern in your shoe or a scarf, or your handbag, or add a belt bag (so on trend this year!).
Tip #4: Add a layer
Another way to break up that all denim look is by adding a layer over top, like an overcoat, cardigan, wrap or vest. Any of those things are going to help break up that denim uniform you have going on.
Still too much denim going on for you?
A really easy combo to nail is jeans + t-shirt + jean jacket. This is a perfect fall look and you can follow all the same rules that I mention above. Here's some examples to give you some creative inspiration.
